February 2010 Newsletter
Dear Montessori Parent,
One good thing about the winter solstice on December 21 is that we start seeing a little more of the sun again. That is certainly evident by this time. The teachers are starting to worry about having enough time for all we would like to do. (At least, this elementary teacher feels that way.) But, we all need to remember that the children are creating themselves. It is not our job. We are to follow the child…he or she will indicate which way to go. This requires faith in the Montessori philosophy. More than anything else, we appreciate that you have confidence in your decision to have your child/children here, and that we are partners in our approach. Of course, we guide and encourage, but it is up to the child to educate herself. Such a great responsibility and privilege.
The children enjoy their friendships, and for Valentine's Day, we are glad to have them express themselves in that regard. To have them learn how to interact together is a major goal for us. Our elementary and primary teachers devote themselves to helping our children learn to share, to be kind to one another, to resolve differences positively, and to contribute to the school community. Valentine's Day can be a part of it.
Valentine's Day celebrations are on Friday, February 12. We will have AM parties only.
Children who normally come only in the PM are also invited to come in the AM on that day and share valentines with their friends.
For primary classes, valentines should have only the name of the child sending them, not that of the child receiving. This way, the children can have fun passing their valentines out themselves, without having to read the names.
Elementary children are making their own valentine lists which they will address to their classmates.
Everyone needs to bring in an empty cereal box, as soon as possible, so the children can make their valentine boxes. The school will provide a mixed-fruit cup for a treat at the parties.
The Upper Elementary class is planning another fundraiser for their St. Louis trip. It will pertain to Valentine’s Day, so be on the lookout for that!
Please continue to have your child dress appropriately for the weather. The Elementary classes, especially, would like to go outside again, but children need to have snow boots & pants (if there is snow), hat and gloves in order to do so. Also, we would appreciate it if you would have your child wear shoes inside the boots or bring shoes along, so that your child does not have to wear boots inside the classroom.
We would very much appreciate having new AM greeters. Please sign up outside the office if you are interested. It’s a very nice way to start the day and the cold air can be quite invigorating!
Pre-piano class will be offered again starting Feb. 11th. Classes meet for a half hour a week for 10 weeks, and the cost is $50.00 See the sign-up outside the office if you are interested.
We have scheduled a second Picture Day for Monday, March 1st. Our picture people will offer a different background from last time, and, as before, you will see a proof and then decide whether or not you would like to purchase prints.
There has been some interest in organizing carpool groups for taking children to and from school each day. To that end, we are posting a sign-up sheet outside the office for anyone who is interested in being involved. You can fill in your information and then feel free to contact anyone else from the list to then organize the carpooling on your own.
Thank you,
The Montessori Staff
