At the Montessori School of Peoria, education is a continuum—each stage building on the last. While children may join us at any level, the greatest benefits come from completing the full cycle through 8th grade.

Primary Program (Ages 3–6)

The Primary Program is where independence begins. Children at this stage are curious, eager to help, and ready to take on new challenges. In our prepared environment, they:

  • Develop self-care skills such as managing shoes, coats, and personal belongings

  • Explore early math and language through hands-on materials

  • Build focus and concentration during long, uninterrupted work periods

  • Practice grace, courtesy, and problem-solving in a community setting

Schedule:

  • Half-day (8:30–11:30) or Full-day (8:30–3:00) options

Why it matters: This is the foundation of Montessori learning—where children first experience the joy of mastering skills at their own pace and contributing to their classroom community.

Lower Elementary (Ages 6–9)

Lower Elementary is a time of rapid curiosity and boundless imagination. Students begin Cosmic Education, a Montessori approach that helps children see their place in the universe and understand how everything is connected.

Here, children:

  • Engage deeply with math, science, geography, and cultural studies

  • Strengthen reading, writing, and research skills

  • Take part in collaborative projects and peer teaching

  • Learn how to plan their work and manage their time

Why it matters: Lower Elementary builds on the independence of Primary, guiding children toward accountability and collaboration.

Upper Elementary (Ages 9–12)

Upper Elementary students are developing a strong sense of identity and purpose. They are ready for greater independence, responsibility, and real-world application of their learning.

In this stage, students:

  • Continue interdisciplinary studies with advanced Montessori materials

  • Undertake long-term research projects of personal interest

  • Go on frequent “Going Out” trips—student-planned outings that connect classroom learning to the wider world

  • Take leadership roles within the school community

Why it matters: Upper Elementary prepares students academically and socially for adolescence, setting the stage for success in our Adolescent Program and beyond.

Adolescent Program (ages 12-15)

Our new Adolescent Program continues the Montessori journey into early adolescence—a stage marked by rapid physical growth, deepening self-awareness, and a drive to find one’s place in the wider world. This program, now in its first year, is designed to grow alongside our students, building year by year into a rich, fully developed middle school experience.

In the Adolescent Program, students:

  • Work in a collaborative, project-based environment that blends academic rigor with real-world application

  • Continue advanced studies in math, science, language arts, and humanities with an emphasis on critical thinking and independent research

  • Explore practical life skills, from personal finance to community service

  • Engage in service learning and leadership roles within and beyond MSP

  • Participate in field studies, service projects, and entrepreneurial opportunities that connect them to the larger community

Why it matters: Early adolescence is a crucial time for developing confidence, purpose, and a strong sense of identity. By continuing through 8th grade in a Montessori environment, students benefit from a consistent, respectful community that knows them well and supports them through this pivotal transition.
